Dog Robe Buying Guide: What Should You Look For?
A good dog robe should make life easier when your dog is wet. It should absorb moisture, stay securely in place and allow your dog to move around comfortably while they dry.
However, not every dog robe offers the same level of coverage, absorbency or fit. Some are little more than a thin piece of fabric, while others are designed as proper wearable towels.
Here is what to consider when choosing the right robe for your dog.

What Is a Dog Robe?
A dog robe is a wearable towel designed to wrap around your dog’s body after swimming, bathing or walking in the rain.
Unlike a regular towel, it stays on while your dog moves around, rests or travels home in the car. The fabric continues absorbing moisture from the coat without you having to chase your dog around with a towel.
Dog robes may also be described as dog drying robes, dog bathrobes, dog towel robes or dog drying coats. Although the wording varies, they all share the same basic purpose: helping wet dogs dry more comfortably.
Look for Properly Absorbent Fabric
The most important part of any dog robe is the fabric touching your dog’s coat.
A lightweight fleece robe may feel warm, but warmth alone will not remove much water. Look for an absorbent inner layer capable of drawing moisture from both the surface of the coat and the damp fur underneath.

This becomes particularly important for dogs with:
- Thick or double coats
- Long or curly fur
- Hair that holds water around the chest and stomach
- Coats that take a long time to dry naturally
My dog robes use a high-density MicroTech™ interior to absorb moisture while the robe remains securely wrapped around your dog.

Choose Enough Body Coverage
A dog’s back is only one of the areas that gets wet.
Water also collects around the chest, stomach, neck and sides of the body. A robe that only covers the topline can leave these areas exposed and allow water to drip onto the floor, furniture or car seat.
Look for a design with:
- Full back coverage
- A wide section around the chest and stomach
- Neck coverage for wet ears and longer fur
- Enough length to cover the body without restricting the legs
The right coverage helps contain more moisture and reduces the amount of spray released when your dog shakes.
Make Sure It Stays in Place
A dog robe cannot keep drying effectively if it twists, slips backwards or falls off whenever your dog moves.
Adjustable neck and belly fastenings help create a secure fit across different breeds and body shapes. A wide belly wrap can also hold the absorbent fabric closer to the wet areas underneath your dog.
The robe should feel secure without being tight. Your dog should still be able to walk, sit, lie down and stretch normally.

Measure Your Dog Before Choosing a Size
Breed recommendations can provide a useful starting point, but dogs of the same breed can have very different proportions.
Measuring your dog is the most reliable way to choose a robe. Start at the base of the neck and measure along the back to the base of the tail. You should also check the chest measurement where required.
If your dog falls between sizes, consider how much coverage and adjustment each size provides. A robe that is too small may leave wet areas exposed, while one that is too large may move around or interfere with your dog’s legs.
Dachshunds and other long-bodied dogs may benefit from a robe specifically shaped around their longer backs, deeper chests and shorter legs.
Consider Where You Will Use It
Think about the situations in which your dog normally gets wet.
For beach trips, you may want a robe that can be put on before your dog gets into the car. After baths, full body coverage can help contain water while your dog wanders around the house. For rainy walks, a robe can continue drying the coat while your dog settles down indoors.
A well-designed robe can be useful after:
- Baths and showers
- Beach trips
- Swimming
- Rainy walks
- Muddy outdoor adventures
- Hydrotherapy sessions

Check That It Is Easy to Wash
A dog robe will regularly come into contact with water, sand, mud and dog hair, so it needs to be easy to clean.
Always follow the care instructions supplied with the robe. Avoid fabric softener on absorbent microfibre because it can coat the fibres and gradually reduce their ability to absorb water.
Having a robe that can be washed and reused after everyday adventures makes it far more practical than something reserved for occasional bath time.
Does Every Dog Need a Robe?
Not every dog needs one, but a robe can be particularly useful if your dog swims regularly, dislikes being towel-dried or has a coat that remains damp for a long time.
It can also make a noticeable difference if you are tired of wet shake-off covering the bathroom, car or furniture.
The best dog robe is not simply something that looks cosy. It should function as a secure, wearable towel that absorbs moisture, covers the right areas and fits your dog comfortably.
