Living in Port Macquarie, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to beautiful coastline. But as any dog owner knows, not all beaches are created equal—especially when you have a four-legged friend who loves to run free.
If you’re looking for the perfect day out with your four-legged friend, you’re in for a treat. I’ve put together a guide to my personal favourite spots where the waves are good, the dogs are welcome, and the coffee is exceptional.
I hope you brought your dog towel with you—you’re going to need it with this choice of beautiful beach walks!

1. Lighthouse Beach & The Local Favourites
The Walk: Lighthouse Beach is one of Port Macquarie’s most iconic spots. For dog owners, the real magic happens south of Watonga Rocks, where the beach opens up into a massive off-leash area. It’s the perfect place for your dog to burn off energy, chase a ball, and splash in the shallows.
"💡 Local Tip: Visit at low tide! The rock pools near Watonga Rocks are exposed, giving your dog fascinating new areas to sniff and explore. Oh and the light here at sunset is particularly great for that evening stroll or photo - see my image above."

The Coffee Stops: You are spoiled for choice here. Depending on what you are in the mood for, try one of these:
- Coast Cafe: Located right at the Tacking Point Surf Club, this is the spot for views. You can sit in the outdoor area with your dog and watch the waves roll in.
- Bittersweet Cafe: Just a minute's drive up the hill at the Watonga Street shops, this is my go-to for a serious coffee and breakfast.
- Inside Out: Right next door to Bittersweet. It’s a dangerous spot to visit because not only do they do great coffee, but their shop is filled with stunning homewares and gifts.
2. Nobbys Beach & Sandbox Cafe

The Walk: Nobbys Beach is a local favourite. Nestled between towering headlands, it offers a sheltered stretch of sand that is designated off-leash. It’s often a bit quieter than Lighthouse, making it a fantastic spot for a more relaxed game of fetch or a gentle swim.
"💡 Local Tip: Parking can get tricky on weekends. If the main lot is full, try parking on the street near Flynn’s Beach and taking the scenic coastal walk around the headland to Nobbys—it adds an extra 10 minutes of sniffing time for your dog!"

The Coffee: Once you’re done on the sand, take a stroll over to Sandbox Cafe, located just around the corner at Flynn’s Beach. It has a wonderfully laid-back atmosphere and is super pet-friendly, allowing your dog to join you in the outdoor seating area.
3. The Breakwall & Salty Crew Kiosk

The Walk: While the Town Beach sand is for humans only, the Town Beach Breakwall is arguably the most famous dog-walking spot in town. It’s an on-leash walk, but the vibe is unmatched. You can walk right alongside the Hastings River, spot the painted rocks, and often see dolphins playing in the estuary.
"💡 Local Tip: Keep an eye on the water! This is the best spot in Port Mac to see dolphins playing in the river mouth. They often swim right alongside the wall in the morning."

The Coffee: Conveniently located right at the start of the walk is Salty Crew Kiosk. This place lives and breathes the coastal lifestyle. Grab a smoothie or a coffee and sit on their deck or the grassy knoll nearby—it’s the perfect vantage point to watch the surf while your dog enjoys the fresh sea air.
4. Lake Cathie Beach & Sunshine's
The Walk: If you want to escape the crowds, take the short 15-minute drive south to Lake Cathie. The beach from Kywong Street down to Middle Rock is a massive stretch of off-leash paradise. It’s wide, open, and perfect for dogs who need serious room to zoom without running into too many others.

"💡 Local Tip: If the ocean is too rough, the lagoon at Lake Cathie (when open to the sea) offers calm, shallow water that is perfect for puppies or older dogs who want a paddle without the big waves."
The Coffee: After a big run, head to Sunshine’s at Lake Cathie. It’s a charming spot right near the lake with a relaxed vibe and great outdoor seating where your dog is welcome. Their burgers and smoothies are the perfect post-beach fuel before heading back into town.

Dolphin & Dog - Port Macquarie
Hi, I’m Scott. I founded Dolphin & Dog right here in Port Macquarie, inspired by the lifestyle we live every day on these beaches.
This guide shares my absolute best local knowledge because I want you to enjoy our coastline as much as I do. But if there is one thing I’ve learned from years of beach runs and coffee stops, it’s that the "wet dog vs. clean car" battle is real.

We all love a beach day, but we don’t love the wet dog smell or the sand that ends up coating the backseat of the car.
That’s exactly why I designed our latest range of beach essentials—to make beach days, pool trips, and bath time effortless for the whole family.
-
For Every Dog (Yes, even Dachshunds!): My Dog Drying Robes are a game-changer. Crafted with an ultra-absorbent microfibre inner and a super-soft cotton outer, they wick away moisture instantly. I now have sizes for every breed, including a specialised Dachshund range designed for longer bodies.

-
For the Humans: I didn't want the owners to feel left out. We now have matching Reversible Hooded Towels for Toddlers, Kids, and Adults. Whether you're 2 or 42, you can stay warm and dry after a swim.

-
The Tote: Don't forget to grab the matching Illustrated Tote Bag—featuring my original hand-drawn artwork, it's the stylish way to carry all your new gear.

New Feature: The Gift Box Builder
Looking to spoil a fellow dog lover? I’ve recently launched the Gift Box Builder to make gifting personal and easy.
I personally illustrated the packaging to capture the spirit of our coastal life. With just a few clicks, you can:
- Choose your favourite Dolphin & Dog products.
- Add a greeting card with a custom message.
- Have it all wrapped in premium paper and delivered straight to their door.
It’s the perfect way to share a piece of Port Macquarie with friends and family.
See you on the beach, Scott
